The Supreme Court on Friday stayed the execution of capital punishment upheld by it earlier for three All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam workers involved in the infamous Dharampuri bus burning incident, in which three college girls were burnt to death in Tamil Nadu in 2000.The order was passed on petitions filed by the three convicts -- C Muniappan, Ravindran and Nedunchezhian -- seeking review of the apex court's verdict last year.

The state government is seeking the death penalty for Roy, the sole convict in the case, and has expressed dissatisfaction with the Sealdah court's verdict, which did not consider the crime "rarest of the rare." The court also ordered Roy to pay a Rs 50,000 fine and directed the state government to pay compensation of Rs 17 lakh to the family of the deceased doctor.
